Abstract
345,563. Electric heating elements. BRITISH THOMSON - HOUSTON CO., Ltd., Crown House, Aldwych, London.- (Assignees of Abbott, C. C.; 240, 2nd Street, Pittsfield, Massachusetts, U.S.A.) May 17, 1930, No. 15204. Convention date, May 17, 1929. [Class 39 (iii).] In an electric immersion heater or the like comprising a resistance element, such as that described in Specification 144,767, [Class 37, Electricity, Measuring &c.], consisting of a wire enclosed in a metal tube the ends of the tube are secured in a supporting plug by means of a soft metal washer wedged between the tube and the sides of a cavity in the block. In the arrangement shown the cavities 17, 17a in the plug 11 are formed with a cylindrical outer part and a tapering inner part into which a soft copper washer 20 is driven. The cavities are covered by a common cover 23 of insulating material with openings 25 through which the leads 15 pass. The cavities and cover are fitted with a plastic insulating material which sets on heating, sealing the holes 25. The sheath 10 of the element is brazed to the outer face of the plug at 21, 21a. To the terminals 15, 15a connect. ing pieces 26 are secured by swaging. Where the pieces 26 bear on the cover 25 they are formed with knife-edges. Each connecting piece is provided with a clamping member 27 and screw 28. In a modification each of the cavities 17, 17a has its separate cover.
