Abstract

345,340. Artificial hands. BLATCHFORD, C. D. W. and BLATCHFORD, W. A. D., 90, Clapham Road, Stockwell, London. Dec. 20, 1929, No. 39108. [Class 81 (ii).] In an artificial hand of the type in which a thumb is axially pivoted so as to be movable relative to the fingers and retained in adjusted position by spring means, the thumb 7 is fulcrumed at 6 in a socket member 5 which is rotatable on an upstanding member 4 provided on a plate 3 fitted to the hand, and is retained in various positions by a co-operating spring-pressed ball 13 and recesses 10, or by a cam member and spring, so that the thumb may be positioned between the first two fingers, to the side of the first finger, or in any other position. The thumb is normally pressed into contact with the fingers by a spring or resilient rubber or other member 16, and has a recess 18 co-operating with a stop 17. The socket has a baseplate 9 with a stop pin 11 which rides in a recess formed in the plate 3. In a modification the ball 13 may be positioned in the socket 5 and the apertures 10 in the hand 1, or the socket may have a cam member with two flat faces adapted. to contact with a spring. The thumb is rotated by hand and may be moved to and from the fingers by means of an appendage passing over the shoulder. The Provisional Specification states that the thumb may be connected with the hand by a mortice and tenon joint, and that any suitable detent or like means, such as projections in one member engaging recesses in the other, may be used to retain the thumb in adjusted position.
