Abstract
381,386. Devices for use in curling and bowls. TURNBULL, W. J., 1319, Fulton Avenue, West Vancouver, Canada. Nov. 23, 1931, No. 32442. [Class 132 (ii).] A device for use in curling or bowls capable of being projected along a surface so as to follow a curved or alternatively a straight path comprises an outer ring- shaped slidable member and an inner loosely rotatable member unsymmetrically weighted. The outer ring-shaped member 1 is made of light material and the inner loosely rotatable ball 4 of bronze or other heavy material has a pocket 5 drilled on one side which is closed with a tightly fitting plug 6. The plug 6 is preferably of material having a different colour to that of the ball to indicate the position of the disparity of weight, but if the plug is of the same material as the ball, the edges of the plug are slightly bevelled at 7 to indicate its position. If a ball of light weight is used the plug can be of heavy metal. To further indicate the disparity of ball weight a band 8 of indentations or V-shaped figures 9 and dots 10 surround the ball equatorially, the dots being closer to the heavy side of the ball. When the plane of the band 8 contains the line of projection the device ultimately follows a curved path but when the plug 6 is uppermost the device follows a straight path.
