Abstract
345,229. Solidifying carbon dioxide. RUDD, H. B., 11, West 42nd Street, New York, U.S.A. Nov. 14, 1929, No. 34825. Convention date, Nov. 17, 1928. [Class 8 (ii).] Carbon dioxide is expanded through a valve to form ice in a chamber 3, and the ice cake when it completely fills the space presses on a plate 35 to close the valve, which remains closed when the cake is removed. The apparatus comprises a casing 1 with a hinged lid 2. Within a metal ring 9 on the casing is a wooden block 12 carrying a recessed plate 13, while the lid contains a recessed wooden block 78 ; the recesses co-operate to form the ice chamber. A stem 23 on the base carries a valve chamber 27 with which a coil 22 communicates ; the coil conveys the gas to be solidified, and is insulated by wooden sleeves 8, 20. The valve casing is formed with a gas outlet 28, Fig. 4, and contains a ball valve 47 adapted to stop the gas flow when required. The plate 35 is slidably mounted over the top of the valve casing, and supports superposed layers of wire gauze and fabric, the outer edges of which are screwed to the plate 13. The unsolidified gas escapes from the chamber 3 through these layers to the space around the coil 22 and escapes through the base plate 6. The ball valve can be held closed against inlet of gas by a spindle 52 fitted with a handle and secured to a sleeve 51 on a threaded projection 50. In addition, automatic valve closing means is provided, comprising a spring 63 tending tc rotate the sleeve which is normally held against rotation by a latch 65 engaging an arm 67 on the sleeve. The completion of the formation of an ice cake forces the plate 35 down and through pins 62 depresses a sleeve 58 carrying a set screw 60 which engages the latch and allows the spindle to rotate. The latch may also be tripped at any stage of ice formation by a shaft 71 having a cranked end to engage the latch. A receptacle 92 of hard rubber &c. is inserted in the chamber 3 in which to form the ice cake.
