Abstract

344,704. Hose reels. SMITH, R., Goldsmith Place, Sherwood Street, Notting- ham, and MORRIS, J., Salford Fire Engine Works, Cross Lane, Salford, Manchester. April 24, 1930, No. 12619. [Classes 99 (i) and 99 (ii).] In a fire hose &c. reel 2 of the kind which is rotatably supported on a carrier 7 and the latter is mounted in a wall &c. bracket 8 so as t o b e capable o f swivelling about an axis at right - angles to the reel, water is supplied from a pipe 16 to the hose 1 successively through a duct 15 formed in the said bracket, a second duct 18 in one arm of the carrier, the axle 4 of the reel, and a hollow radial arm 19 connecting the axle 4 to the hose. The carrier is of U-shape with bearings at the upper ends of the arms thereof to receive the axle, the joint between the axle and the arm carrying the duct 18 being packed with a gland 20; the opposite end of the axle may comprise an extension, which is screwed to the main part of the axle and has the arm 19 formed integral therewith, provided with a solid portion 4a to seat in the bearing of the other arm. The reel is secured to its axle bv a wheel 3 and carries end hose-retaining rings 5. The swivelling joint between the carrier and wall bracket comprises a hollow stem 9 which is secured to the carrier 7 and projects through a housing 12 carried by the bracket and into a chamber 15c therein, the latter being in communication with the duct 15. The stem is retained in the housing by a nut 11 screwed thereon, and fluidtightness of the joint is secured by a packing ring which is compressed between the nut 11 and a second nut 13 screwed into the lower part of the housing.
