Abstract

371,130. Hose reels. SMITH, R., of Smith, Ltd., Goldsmith Place, Sherwood Street, Nottingham, and MORRIS, J., Salford Fire Engine Works, Salford, Manchester. March 19, 1931, Nos. 8398 and 31865. [Classes 99 (i) and 99 (ii).] In a hose reel 1 of the kind which is rotatably mounted on a U-shaped carrier 5 adapted to swivel upon a support 7 through which the water is conducted, the swivel joint 6 is so constructed that it can be adjusted externally without dismantling the carrier from the support. In the form shown in Fig. 2, fluidtightness is secured by packing 19 which is disposed between a tubular member 9 bolted to the support 7 and an external sleeve 12 secured by bolts 21a to a flange 21 on the reel carrier 5 and which is compressed by the said bolts between a shoulder 15 on the member 9 and the end of a sleeve 20 formed integral with the carrier. The shoulder 15 is constituted by a ring screwed on to the member 9, and a washer 19a is preferably interposed between the ring and the packing 19. Annular channels 10, 14 may be provided in a flange 8 of the member 9 and the end of the sleeve 12 to accommodate a series of balls 11 constituting a ball bearing mounting for the reel carrier. A bifurcated member 25 pivoted on the flange 8 and adapted to engage the carrier 5 and be locked thereto by a bolt 26 engaging a hole 27 in the carrier may be provided to prevent rotation of the carrier ; rotation of the reel may also be prevented by a forked member 22 pivoted on the carrier and adapted to engage the part 3a of the reel. Fig. 5 shows a modified joint in which packing 34 is disposed between a hollow stem 5c integral with the carrier and a sleeve portion 7b on the support 7a and is compressed against a ring 33 on the stem 5c by a gland 35.
