Abstract
344,439. Vapour &c. lamp systems. BAY, Z., 2, Dorotheenstrasse, Berlin. Oct. 28, 1929, No. 32764. Convention date, Oct. 26, 1928. [Class 38 (iv).] In order to vary the colours of light emitted by gas discharge tubes, for example neon-mercury or hydrogen tubes, the tubes are supplied with current impulses separated by pauses, the duration of which are a multiple of the duration of the impulses, and the instantaneous value of the impulses many times that of the effective or normal current value. In Fig. 5 the tube 1 is supplied through a variable quenched spark-gap 3. As shown in Fig. 10 a variable inductance 5 varies the duration of the current impulse and a variable resistance 8 in the supply side of condenser 2 varies the number of impulses per unit time to maintain approximately constant energy supply to the tube. The condenser 11 short-circuits high-frequency impulses and the condenser 9 suppresses low-frequency impulses. Other arrangements are described and homopolar generators or electron tubes may be employed to generate the necessary impulses. Specification 12087/05, [Class 39, Electric lamps &c.], is referred to.
