Abstract

Dibenzanthrone dyes; vat and sulphuretted dyes, dyeing with.-Alkali-soluble dyestuffs are made by treating dibenzanthrone or its substitution products with sulphides of phosphorus, or substances yielding these, at a temperature of 250 DEG C. or over. The alkaline solutions of the products may be used for dyeing; or the products may be dyed from a sodium sulphide or hydrosulphite vat. In examples, (1) dibenzanthrone is heated with phosphorus pentasulphide (a) to 300 DEG C. to give a product which, in alkaline solution, dyes cotton in blue-black shades becoming violet-red on after-treatment with sodium hypochlorite solution, and (b) to 250 DEG C. to give a product dyeing cotton in bluish-red shades from an alkaline bath, and (2) Bz2:Bz21-dimethoxydibenzanthrone is heated with a mixture of red phosphorus and sulphur in a current of carbon dioxide to 250 DEG C.; the product, when dissolved in a solution of sodium carbonate, sodium hydroxide or ammonia, dyes wool or silk in blue-grey shades changing to blue-violet when after treatment with sodium perborate.
