Abstract
343,582. Firebridges; grates. CHADWICK, V. R., 238B, Gray's Inn Road, London. Nov. 22, 1929, No. 35871. [Class 51 (i).] A bar for a sectional firebridge is of triangular shape and is formed with a vertical web 11 recessed at its lower part to fit on to a bearer 23, and with edge flanges 14, which are notched to allow passage of secondary air both over the grate and into the flue. In the furnace shown the bridge overlaps the firebars, and air is supplied to the front section through the rear part of the grate, and to the rear section through conduits 31 by steam jets 32. Any ash which accumulates in the front section of the bridge passes through a grid 24 in the bridge support, and can be dumped by operation of a balanced flap 26. The ash space beneath the bridge is shut off from the lower front part of the furnace by a door 28. Air is supplied to the grate by steam jets 20 through tapering troughs 18. The air supply openings in the bridge preferably decrease in size towards the top of the bridge, and the air may be directed therethrough by curved baffles 22. In a modification (Figs. 6 and 7, not shown) applied to a natural draught furnace, the bridge is supported clear of the grate, and the air supply to the rear section is controlled by a pivoted damper. The grate may be constructed as described in Specification 343,581.
