RANGE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 498,298, dated May 30, 1893. .duplication filed February 23, 1892. Serial No. 422,391. (No model.)
T0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, NAPOLEON J. PERIOLAT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illi= nois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ranges; andldo hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make anduse' the same;
This invention relates to a novel construction in stoves or ranges, the objects being to provide in a range of that class in which flues are arranged onallsides of the oven, devices for utilizing the maximum of caloric energy iu the most efficient manner, and to provide for the general eficiency and utility of ranges Aof this description.
The invention consists in the features of` construction and combinations of parts herein# after fully described and specifically claimed.
In the accompanying drawings illustrating my invention,`Figure l, is a horizontal section on the line 1-1 of Fig. 2. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal section on the line 2-2 of Fig. l. Figs. 3 and 4 are vertical transverse sections taken respectively on the lines 3-3 'and 4--4 of Fig. 1.
Referring to said drawings A indicates the fire pot, B the ash pit, and VC the oven of a range. The said range is provided with four fines, namely a front fine 1 between the fire pot and ash box and the front plate 2 of the oven; a bottom iiue 3, bottom plate 4 of the oven and bottom plate 5 of the range; aback flue 6 between the back plate 7 of the oven and back plate 8 of the range, and atop iiue 9 between the top plate 10 of the oven and top plate 11`of the range. The range is so constructed that the draft can be caused to pass through the iiuesl, 3, 6 and 9 on the four sides of the oven before passing out through the chimney, or it can be directed in the first place into the top due 9rand then to the chimney, y the latter arrangement being used when it is desired to cook on the top plate of the stove and not with the oven. The chimney 12 leads from a chamber 13 at rear side of the range that communicates with the top flue 9, and a partition 14 is located between the top plates 10 and 11 of the oven and range. The said partition extends from the rear side of the range betwcenthe chimney 12 and the lire pot about half way across the range and then turns toward the back of the stove. As shown in Fig. 1 the end of said partition is located far enough back` so that the draft passing around thek end thereof will pass beneath the two back boiler plates shown in dotted lines. A damper l5 is located between the end of said partition and the front side of the range so that by placing said damper in an upright position as shown in full lines in the several gures, the draft will iirst pass around the oven before entering the chimney, While by placing said damper in a horizontal position, as shown in dotted lines, the draft will pass directly into the top iiue, around the partition and out through the chimney.
An overhanging ledge 16 extends from the upper edge of the fire pot over the front iiue 1 and serves to prevent any fuel from entering said flue 1. The said ledge 16 extends back as far as the partition 14 or about even with the back wall of the front flue, so that the draft in passing down into the front flue 1 enters the same at the front side of the range and to distribute said draft across the oven during its passage a deflecting plate 17 is located within the front iiue 1 and extends in an inclined direction from the'upper front edge thereof downward toward the rear side of said iiue 1 as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 3. The draft is thereby thrown back toward the, rear side of the range and when it enters the bottom flue 3, it spreads out and passes to the back flue 6. Within the back iiue 6 is located a curved deiiecting plate 18 that extends from the lower rear portion of said due to the upper end of same and toward the front thereof. When the draft enters said iiue 6 the curved deflecting plate will cause it to pass toward the front side of the range, whence it passes into the top flue 9 and then back under the several boiler plates to the chimney. It is obvious that by ythe construction herein shown and described,'the draft always passes under all the boiler plates whether it passes around the oven or directly into the top flue 9.
As a further and separate improvement in ranges of this class 1 have provided a double wall 19 between the fire pot and ash pit and the front iiue 1 forming an air passage 20 be- IOO tween the same. A series of perforations 21 is formed in the bottom plate 3 of the range through which the air can pass into said passage. The said passage 20 communicates at its upper end through a perforation 22 with the chamber 13. In this way it will be seen that a continuous current of air is maintained through said passage 20, such air being taken from the room and passing into the chimney. The said air current serves the double purpose of preventing the back plate of the fire pot from becoming too hot, and also for ventilatng the room, as it takes the foul air therefrom and leads itinto the chimney.
As a further improvement, I arrange the pipes 23 of the water back in the back of the fire pot. I am aware that the water back pipes have been arranged heretofore in the back part of the [ire pot, but it is found that in such arrangement said pipes prevent the front end of the oven from being fully heated, and of late, it has been the practice to place the pipes in the front of the lire pot to allow the front of the oven to be fully heated, which is found both inconvenient and undesirable.
I claim as my invention- 1. A range having an oven, a tire pot, a top flue 9 having a partition 14 extending from the rear side thereof between the chimney and fire pot partially across the same, a dainper located between said partition and the front side of the flue, a front flue 1 having a downwardly and rearwardly inclined deiecting plate 17, extending from the upper front end of saine, a bottom flue 3, and a back flue 6 having a curved deflecting plate 18, extending from the lower rear end of the same upwardly and toward the front side thereof.
2. A range having a fire pot, an oven, a front flue 1 located between said fire pot and oven, double walls 19 between said lire pot and front iue providing a 'passage 20, said passage com municating at its lower end with the outside air and at its upper end with the chimney, and bottom, back and top fines.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
NAPOLEON J. PERIOLAT.
