may at all times be maintained and thus promote and insure the complete combustion of the waste-products fuel.
It will be observed that the roof e' of the tire. box inclines upwardly and backwardly on its inner face, thereby enlarging the rear opening of the fire box and thus preventing puiiing and cho-king of the furnace by insuring a free and adequate outlet for the product-s of combustion during the times when a very hot fire is maintained. It will be observed that to assist this free discharge of the products of combustion during very hot fires, the top of the back wall is approximately level with the grate and also that the distance between the roof and the grate at the front end of the fire box is less than 4the distance between the roof and the top surface of said back wall, so that when fuel is piled upon the grate surface the space above the fuel will widen or enlarge backwardly. From the back wall le of the fire box, the bottom Z of the combustion chamber inclines sharply upwardly to a suitable point beyond the front end of the boiler m, at which point it joins a bridge wall a which is curved on its upper surface to conform somewhat to the convex curvature of the boiler. With this upward slope Z and the curved bridge wall, it will be observed that the hot products of combustion are caused to be thrown up an around the boiler and thus obtain from the pi oducts a maximum of heating effect. From the bridge wall, the bottom 0 of the combustion chamber yslopes downwardly to the rear end of the furnace to the end that the products of combustion shall have a free outlet back of the bridge wall and shall be caused to spread before they pass up into the space p atthe back of the furnace, whence they enter the flues of the boiler. At the front of each boiler is a smoke box q, and these two smoke boxes are connected at one side to a central horizontal iiue r which leads backwardly to the stack s. At the juncture of each smoke box with the flue r is a damper t for controlling the draft. By means o these dampers the draft is controlled entirely, there being no draft doors or dampers at the openings b of the ash pit. This construction enables the furnaces to be perfectly controlled without the introduction of col air into the fire boxes or under the boilers, whereby the operations of the furnaces may be controlled and the heat retained in the combustion chamber and the boiler flues.

VVooDLiNG, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Morganton, county of Burke, State have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Boiler- Furnaces, of which the following is a full and clear specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a view partly in plan and partly in horizontal section showing my invent-ion applied to a twin boiler furnace; Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view of the same; Fig. 3 a vertical sectional view through the bridge wall', Fig. 4 a detail perspective view o a form of grate which I prefer using with my furnace.
The object of this invention is to so construct the apparatus that the maximum steaming capacity shall be obtained from the fuel, and a further object is to adapt the furnace for using a combination fuel consisting of coal and certain waste fibrous products such as saw dust, tan-bark, etc., as more fully hereinafter set forth.

Coal fuel is introduced through the charging openings f which are covered by the usual doors g. The waste-products fuel (such as saw dust, etc.,) is introduced into the fire box through a series of charging tubes or holes l formed in the roof z' vof the fire box, each of these charging holes being provided with a removable cover j. Any number of these charging holes may be employed and they may be arranged in any suitable manner to the end that the fibrous or vegetable fuel may be distributed properly on the grate surface. It will be observed however that these charging holes are spaced a considerable distance away from the front of the furnace, so that coal fuel alone can be spaced upon the front part of the grate surface, whereby a hot coal fire It will be understood that my invention is applicable to single boiler furnaces as well as to the double boiler furnaces illustrated.
