[Class 123 (ii).] In feed-supply apparatus for locomotives, comprising a tank 18 for storing preheated water, means are provided for feeding the boiler when the steam regulator is closed, both from the storage tank 18 and from the cold feed tank, the boiler being fed when the regulator is open, only from the cold feed tank. To supply hot water from the storage tank when the regulator is closed, a control valve 23 in the apparatus is opened and a valve 17 is closed. Boiler steam then flows through pipe 7, chamber 44, valve opening 36 and pipes 11, 12 into the upper part of the storage tank, from which the hot water flows into the boiler through the clack valve 22. When the valve 17 is opened, and the boiler steam flows through pipe 10 and chamber 17 to an injector 49 drawing cold water from the tender through a pipe 2 and forcing it into the boiler through pipes 9, 13 and the clack valve 19. The pipe 13 may open into the boiler through an injector nozzle assisting the supply of hot water to the boiler from the storage tank. When the regulator is open and no feed is required, the valve 23, 17 are closed and the pressure of the boiler steam in the pipes 4, 5 opens valves 39, 30 controlling respectively the entrance of cold water to the feed injector and the opening of the exhaust-steam admission valve 33 by the steam pressure acting on a piston 32. The exhaust steam flows through a nozzle 46 mixes with the cold water in a combining nozzle and forces the mixture through pipes 9, 14 into the storage tank. If feed is required when the regulator is open, the valve 23 is opened to allow boiler steam to flow through pipe 7, chamber 44, valve 26, pipe 8 and valve 41 into the live steam nozzle 49, from which the boiler steam flows together with the exhaust steam flowing through the nozzle 46, into the mixing nozzle, and thence the mixture of steam and cold water flows through pipes 9, 13 and clack box 19 into the boiler.
