Abstract

Supersaturated aqueous solutions of water-soluble salts of the sulphonic acids referred to as fire-extinguishing agents in Specification 319,083 are obtained with the aid of urea or thiourea. In an example, the sodium salt of n-butylnaphthalene sulphonic acid, obtained by treating n-butyl alcohol and naphthalene in equimolecular proportions with two molecular proportions of concentrated sulphuric acid, is mixed with urea and dissolved in a small quantity of water. The resulting viscous solution is mixable with water and can be employed for fire-extinguishing purposes in accordance with Specification 319,083, [Class 47 (ii), Fire-extinguishing &c.].
