[Class 34 (ii).] Material to be dried is conveyed on trays carried by endlesschains through pre-heating passages 14, 13, a main drying chamber 12, and final drying passages 11, 10, 9 to a discharge duct 8. Outside air for drying the material is preheated by its passage over the hot dry material in the duct 8 to a fan 16 which forces it over an air heater 5, heated by a furnace 3, to the passages 9, 10, 11 through which it flows in countercurrent to the material. From the upper parts of the chamber 12 the air flows downwardly and through perforations in the base into exhaust ducts 18 .. 21. The base of the chamber is shaped so as to direct material displaced from the trays to suitable outlets.
