Abstract

245,263. Elkington, V. Dec. 9, 1924. Air, controlling temperature, humidity, and direction of flow of.-A method of drying hops &c. consists in distributing dry heated air over the upper surface of the hops and heated air containing a regulable quantity of moisture to the under surface, the temperature of the air beneath the hops being gradually raised to that of 'the air above. As shown in Fig. 1, the hops 3 are supported upon a hair and hot dry air is forced by a fan 5 through an air-heating surface 4, pipe 6, and rotary hub 8 to the air-distributing arms 7, while hot air moistened by steam jets 15 is supplied through a pipe 9 to the under surface of the hops. In a modification, the airdistributing arms beneath the hops are dispensed with and an air-heating furnace is placed in the lower part of the chamber in which the hops are supported, the air being distributed by a fan. In another arrangement, the air is supplied to the upper and lower sides of the hops from a single heater 23, Fig. 3, through a pipe 6 and a duct 24. In another modification, the pipe passes through the duct within the chamber.
