Abstract
340,217. Integrating -apparatus. YOUNG, A. E., 1524, Asbury Place, Pittsburg, U.S.A. Sept. 20, 1929, No. 28583. Convention date, Aug. 1. [Class 106 (iv).] Apparatus for making a summation of, or for determining the resultant of a plurality of variable quantities comprises a dual device including two rotatable and coaxial members intermittently united for simultaneous rotation about a common axis by electromagnets which are intermittently effective. The differential pressure from an orifice gas meter is transmitted to a piston which moves a pivoted lever 2 the long arm of which ends in a slot in which works a block 3 guided on a vertical guide 4. A drum 5 loose on a shaft 10 is driven by a clockwork 6 and carries on its non-conducting surface two contact strips 8, 9 of which the strip 8 extends longitudinally while the strip 9 is so curved that the circumferential distance between the strips varies as the square root of the distance of the block 3 from a zero point. When the differential pressure in the gas main is zero, the lever 2 is inclined upwardly from left to right, and as the pressure increases the lever swings downwardly. When the brush 7 carried by the block 3 meets the strip 8 the circuit of two solenoids 14 is made and spring arms 12 on the drum 5 are drawn in to engage the teeth of a wheel 11 on the shaft 10 thus clutching the drum to the shaft 10. As the arms move in, they brush past latches 15 connected by a spring 16 and these spring back behind the arms 12 locking them to the wheel 11. The solenoids 14 are only energized while the brush is in contact with the strip 8. When the strip 9 is met, solenoids 17 are energized and the latches 15 are moved against the influence of the spring 16 to release the arms 12 which spring outward declutching the drum. The shaft 10 has thus been rotated proportionately to the square root of the pressure difference during an interval of one rotation of the drum. This movement of the shaft may be transmitted to a registering mechanism, or to compensate for density the shaft 10 may carry a second drum 55 having similar strips 88, 99 and a lever 22 moved proportionately to the static pressure moves a block vertically carrying a brush co-operating with the strips 88, 99 so that a shaft 100 is moved proportionately to the product of the square roots of the static pressure and the differential pressure and a registering mechanism 23 actuated to secure these for successive intervals. An additional drum may co-operate with a temperature arm to give a correction for temperature.
