Counters affording several rates of actuation.- Relates to maximum-demand electricity meters registering over determined intervals excess quantities above an agreed demand or below a specified power-factor, and in which are used a pair of principal elements, for example, a clock and a meter, and a mechanism controlled by both elements, one element moving the mechanism in one direction and the other resetting it at the end of an interval. Pinions a, b are driven by an ordinary meter normally registering on the counter g, the pinion b engaging or disengaging with a rack c at predetermined intervals when the clock or motor i energizes the electromagnet j. The rack carries a contact d which when the agreed demand is reached engages a readily adjustable contact m positioned by a slider n moving over a scale o. The electromagnet e is then energized and the meter registers on the excess counter h. In practice rotary elements are employed for the rack and readily adjustable elements m, n. Mechanical means may a.lternatively be providecl for changing over from the ordinary to the excess counters. On a powerfactor basis one of the principal elements may be an energy meter and the other a wattless-component or ampere-hour meter, each with its own counter, the same intermediate mechanism being utilized to switch in the wattless-component counter when the power-factor has been lowered sufficiently. The energy meter may alternatively be provided with two counters, or with a single counter registering complex units the wattlesscomponent meter then being connected through differential mechanism when the electromagnet e is energized.
