456,920. Prepayment mechanism for meters. ENGLISH ELECTRIC CO., Ltd., 28, Kingsway, London, and TILSTONE, G., Siemens Works, Stafford. July 9, 1935, No. 19563. [Class 27] In a prepayment meter, a friction drive is provided between the measuring element and the consumption register and the coin-operated mechanism to permit these latter two parts to be rotated in either direction independently of the measuring element, thus enabling the register to be zeroized and a test of the accuracy of the cut-off for a given coin value to be carried out without disconnecting the gearing. The meter rotor 10 drives the first indicating spindle ‹ 1 of the register 2 through gearing including a worm 7 and worm wheel 6, the prepayment mechanism (not shown) being geared to one of the spindles of the register. Two hubs 3, 4 are fixed to the spindle 1 and the wheel 6 is loosely mounted on a reduced part 4a of the hub 4. A spring washer 9 with radiating arms is carried on the spindle 1 and compressed between the hub 3 and one face of the wheel 6, so as to hold the other face in frictional engagement with the shouldered part 4b of the hub 4. The member 9 may be a helical spring washer or a plain washer of resilient material. When a test is being made, the spindle 1 is rotated by means of a knurled wheel 5, the wheel 6 slipping on the hub 4.
