Reversing.-In mechanism for driving the cam shalt 3 of a Diesel or like engine constantly in one direction, comprising bevel wheels 1, 2 connected to the earn shaft through a sliding clutch 6 and driven from a bevel wheel on a driving shaft 5, the clutch 6 is operated by a lever 9 carried by a rock shaft 10, which is actuated by a member 13 mounted thereon and engaged by a lever 18 operated upon each reversal of the shaft 5. As shown, the member 13 has projections 14 and an arcuate slot 15 in which slides a die 16 secured to one end of an anchored spring- 17. The bell-crank lever 18, pivoted at 19 and having a projection 20 held by springs 21 in a central position, has an arm 22 engaged by a roller cam 23 on the driving shaft 5, so that the other arm 24 rocks between pins 25 on the die 16, and a pin 26 on the arm 24 rocks between the projections 14 on the member 13 during normal running. On reversal of the driving shaft 5, the pin 26 engages one of the projections 14 and rocks the member 13, shaft 10, and member 9 to shift the sliding clutch 6 automatically from one of the bevel wheels 1, 2 to the other. At the same time, the arm 24 engages one of the pins 25 on the die 16 to slide the die along the slot 15, and the spring 17 pulls on the die 16 and member 13 and causes the member 9 to press the sliding clutch into engagement with the bevel wheel 1 or 2, which now drives the shaft 3 in the same direction as before. In a modification, the lever 18 is rocked by hand and in a Still engine (steam and Diesel), the lever 18 may be actuated from the steam reversing-gear.
