Abstract

334,668. Triggs, W. W., (Reo Motor Car Co.). July 22, 1929. Variable-speed gearing. - In order to reduce noise in toothed gearing, equal-ratio simultaneously loaded gear trains are formed with a difference in pitch. As shown applied to a countershaft variable-speed gear providing three speeds and reverse with a constant mesh second speed constant mesh wheels A, C, E, F are each formed in halves A, A<1> &c., arranged together to form double-helical gears. The teeth of the part E are of sixteen pitch and those on the complementary ring E<1> are of ten pitch. The helix angle is preferably 44‹ 25' or other high angle between 40‹ and 50‹. To facilitate quiet engagement of the dog clutch ring 26 with the teeth 8 or 19, each alternate tooth thereon has a cut-away end portion.
