Abstract
334,239. Wistoft, S. May 30, 1929. Testing edge for milling; coin action, with stationary coin forming abutment. - In a coinfreed vending machine the coin is led to a pocket 9 in which it rests on a fixed knife-edge 15 and an adjustable knife-edge or stop 10 carried by a plate 5 slidable in a guide bracket 2. The plate 5 carries a pin 12 projecting through a slot in the bracket 2 and engaging the upper end of a lever 17, 18. The operating bar 19 of the machine is slidable vertically in a guide 20 on the back plate 1 against the resistance of a spring 39 and is formed with an extension 23 to which is pivoted a latch lever 25 carrying a pin 34 contacting with a cam surface 35 on the lower end of the lever 17, 18. On the drawer, door, or other opening member of the machine being operated the bar 19 is moved upwardly. If a coin having a milled edge has been inserted in the machine movement of the plate 5 to the left is prevented and the lever 17, 18 is held stationary so that the pin 34 rides over the cam surface 35 and the latch lever 25 is moved against the resistance of a spring 31 to escape shoulders 28, 29 on a fixed stop 27. At the end of the upward movement of the bar 19 the nose 26 of the latch lever 25 engages a chamfer 30 on the stop 27 and moves the pin 34 clear of the lever 17, 18 thereby allowing the upper part of the lever 17, 18 to be moved to the right by a spring 36 to release the coin which passes through a slot in the plate to the money receptacle. If the inserted coin has not a. milled edge the upward movement of the bar 19 carries the latch lever 25 into engagement with the shoulder 28 of the stop 27, the pin 34 turning the lever 17, 18 so as to move the plate 5 to the left to cause the stop 10 to push the coin over the knife-edge 15, which is formed with a slot leading to a rejection shoot. If the inserted coin is partially milled the lever 17, 18 is momentarily held and the latch lever 25 partially rotated but the coin subsequently rides over to the knifeedge 15 and the nose of the latch lever engages the shoulder 29 of the stop 27. In a modification the lever 17, 18 is formed at its lower edge with an extension which engages with the extension 23 as the bar 19 approaches the upward limit of its movement so as to rock the lever positively to release the coin and the sliding plate 5 is also formed with a knife-edge engaging the coin so that the coin is gripped over a relatively small arc.
