Abstract
332,968. Gandillon, H. E. May 7, 1929. Street orderlies.-Urban dry waste is collected and transported by the intermittent propulsion of air through a system in which a partial vacuum is maintained. The displacement of the waste is effected in a closed network in small quantities as they are produced by displacements of air effected periodically. The system comprises waste receiving vessels such as D1, Fig. 2, connected to a conduit A, stop valves being provided. G is one of a number of automatic air inlet apparatus controlled by clockwork wound up by the vacuum created in the system. A number of conduits such as A form a network completely fluid-tight leading to a final receiving station. Each receiving vessel is constructed so that when it is opened for the reception of waste it is closed to the conduit A and vice versa; it comprises a chamber 1, Fig. 4, in which moves a cylindrical member 4. with a hemispherical bottom, guided by the cylinder 5 rigidly attached to the top 6 of the chamber. The member 4 and the flared coupling member 2 with its rubber packing 3 on which rest the flanged walls of the chamber 1, constitute a valve which is opened by a handle 11 inserted in a socket 10. This handle first lifts the needle valve 16 against the compression spring 15, the member 4 is then lifted until the neck 13 coincides with the collar 9 when the inrush of air carries the waste from the vessel into the conduit A where the partial vacuum is maintained. The edges of the orifices 21 and 23 are bevelled so as to shear waste of too great a length by rotating the top 19 over the top 6. The number of automatic operations in any apparatus is proportional to the volume of waste passing under it and it is arranged that its times of operation do not coincide with those of any other thus maintaining a constant vacuum. At the collecting station when the vacuum pump 0, Fig. 3, puts the system under depression, the valves M1, J1 are opened, M2, J2 being closed, and the waste collected in the tank K1, from which it is dropped on to the travelling apron P for disposal.
