[A Specification was laid open to inspection under Sect. 91 of the Acts, April 25, 1942.] [Classes 21 and 125 (ii)] Apparatus for filling bottles, boxes or other tight closures with liquid, e.g. milk cans, comprises a vessel 5 having an outlet 14 at the bottom thereof and connected with a distributing pipe 17 from which depend a series of branch pipes 18 each passing through the air-tight closure 24 of each of the containers 19 ; a pipe 20 projects upwardly from the pipe 17 at the end thereof remote from the inlet for permitting the escape of air as the liquid gravitates from the pipe 17 simultaneously to the containers and in progressively decreasing quantities into successive containers until each is filled. When filling the containers with milk the vessel 5 serves as a receiving vat for milk supplied through the pipe 7 the top of the vessel 5 being connected by a pipe 8 to a vacuum pump 9. A device 10 is provided to eliminate back-lash and comprises a bowl 12 into which depends one end of the pipe 8<SP>1</SP> having a flap or other non- return valve 13. Cocks 15, 21 are provided on the pipes 14, 20. The distributing pipe 17 may be formed of sections engaging T-pieces 23 provided with rubber sealing rings. If desired the pipes 18 may be adjustably or rigidly secured to the lids 24. When all the cans are filled the taps 15, 21 are turned, the lids 24 are removed and substituted by ordinary lids. If the lids are fitted with pipes 18 having taps therein the taps may be closed before the distributing pipe is removed so as to seal the cans under vacuum. If the vessel 5 is not provided the pipe 7 may be coupled direct to the distributing pipe and a device 27, similar to the device 10, provided for the return pipe 20.
