Description

CHA
BARREL, CLOSURE Filed Nov, 6. 1922 ANNA. BRECHAK,
BARREL Application filed November T 0 all w 7mm it may concern:
Be it known that I, ANNA BREOHAK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Day ton, in the county of Montgomery and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Barrel Closures, of which the following is a specification, ref erence being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to closures for barrels and similar containers.
One object of the invention is to provide a closure which can be quickly and easily applied to the container and will tightly close the same.
A further object of the invention is to provide such a closure having a conduit dis charging through a liquid seal so that gases generated within the container may escape but air will be prevented from entering the container.
A further object of the invention is to provide such a closure having a ventilating conduit detachably secured thereto so that it may be removed and the closure sealed by a suitable cap.
Other objects of the invention will appear as the device is described in detail.
In the accompanying drawings Fig. 1 is a sectional view of a barrel showing my invention applied thereto, the closure being partly in elevation; and Fig. 2 is a'detail view of the cap for sealing the closure when the ventilating tube has been removed.
In these drawings I have illustrated one embodiment of my invention and have shown the same as applied to a barrel having the head removed from the upper end thereof, but it will be obvious that the closure itself may take various forms and that it may be applied to containers of various kinds.
As here shown the closure is in the form of a hood or cap 1 of flexible material having its circumferential edge formed of elastic material so that it can be stretched to enable it to be slipped over the end of the barrel and will then contract snugly about the end of the barrel to form a tight joint. Preferably the body portion as well as the circumferential edge portion thereof, is formed of soft rubber which has sufficient elasticity to enable it to be stretched over the end of the barrel. If desired, the edge portion to the closure may be provided with handles 2 to facilitate the applying of the TES PATENT OFFIC.
or DAYTON, OHIO.
CLOSURE.

closure to and the removal of the same from thebarrel. The body of the closure preferably tapers upwardly so as to give the same, when applied to the barrel, a substantially conical shape. If the closure is to be used merely as an air tight closure without ventilation, there will be no opening in the closure but in the preferred form of the device, as'here shown, I have provided the closure, preferably at the apex thereof, with means for connecting therewith a ventilati'ng'tube, such as is shown at 3. While the ventilating tube may be connected with the closure in various ways I prefer to provide the closure with a nipple or screw threaded boss 4 adapted to receive a screw threaded coupling or cap 5 with which the tube 3 is connected. The lower end of the tube 3 is preferably immersed in a liquid seal, which may conveniently consist of a pail of water, as shown at 6. Consequently any gases generated within the barrel or container may escape through the tube 3 and if the pressure is suflicient they will be discharged from the tube through the water in the pail, but air is prevented from entering the tube. The nipple 4, by means of which the conduit 3 is connected with the closure, is preferably of a relatively large size so that by removing the coupling 5 the contents of the barrel may be inspected or portions of the same may be removed without removing the closure. When the generation of gases withi in the closure has ceased and it is desired to seal the barrel, this may be done by detaching the coupling 5 from the nipple and applying thereto a cap 6, as shown in Fig. 2.
While I have shown and described one embodiment of my invention I wish it to be understood that I do not desire to be limited to the details thereof as various modifications may appear to one skilled in the art.
Having now fully described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. A closure for barrels and the like comprising a hood of flexible material having an elastic circumferential edge portion adapted to be stretched about the open end of a barrel, and handles applied to said edge portion of saidhood to facilitate the application of said hood to a barrel.
2. A closure for barrels and the like comprising a hood of flexible material having an elastic circumferential edge portion adapted to be stretched about the end of a barrel, and a conduit communicating with said barrelthrough said hood, and means for preventing the passage of air to said barrel Without interfering with the escape of gases from said barrel through said conduit.
3. A closure for barrels and the like comprising a hood of flexible material having 'an :elastic circumferential edge portion prising a substantially conical hood of flexibleinaterial having an elastic circumferential edge portion adapted to be stretched about the open end of a barrel, a nipple secured to the small end of said conical hood and communicating with the interior thereof, a conduit, and a coupling carried by said conduit for attaching the same to said nipple.
6. A closure for barrels and the like comprising a substantially conical hood of flexible'material having an elastic circumferential edge portion adapted to be stretched about the open end of a barrel, a nipple secured to the small end. of said conical hood and communicating with the interior thereof, and a detachable closure for said nipple.
In testimony whereof, I aflix my signature hereto.
ANNA BRECHAK.
