Heating by electricity.- In means for igniting a heavy oil burner by a jet of light oil which is preignited by causing air heated to the required temperature to come into contact with the jet, an electric heater for the air comprises a heating wire c', Fig. 1, carried by a terminal plug c within a preferably steel tube e containing an insulating liner f and washer f<1>. The wire c' is wound on a former c<2> and painted with a paste consisting of sodium silicate and asbestos powder, the whole being finally baked. Compressed air is supplied through a pipe j and issues from an orifice e<4> in a plate e<2>, preferably of monel metal, so as to impinge upon the light oil yet issuing from the pilot burner a.
