Abstract
331,790. Chicago Pneumatic Tool Co., (Assignees of Meunier, L. F.). Nov. 12, 1928, [Convention date]. Nuts and screws, screwing-up.-In a portable machine for driving home nuts &c. where at the end of the operation a gradually increasing or sudden resistance is experienced, a clutch is included which automatically disconnects the drive when this occurs. An electric motor in a casing A, preferably deriving its power from a cable a<1> passing through a handle of the machine, rotates. through gears 4<a>, 6<a>, 6<b> a gear 7<a> keyed to a shaft 7. A gear 7<b> meshing with a gear 5<a> on a shaft 5 is loose on the shaft 7 but a clutch member 7e slidably keyed, as by balls 7f, to the shaft 7 is urged by a spring 7g into engagement therewith. When a limiting resistance, adjustable by a nut 7<h>, is experienced, the teeth of the clutch ride out of engagement against the action of the spring. The shaft 5 carries a flange 5b making a running fit within the casing, and surrounded by packing b<1> to prevent leakage of grease &c., and beneath the flange a, clutch head with teeth 5<e> adapted to engage teeth 3b on the tool holder when the machine is pressed against the work and the resistance of a spring 35 is overcome.
