Abstract

197,396. Fletcher, R. W. J. Feb. 9, 1922. Driving machines; drilling; screws, inserting. - Transmission gearing for machine tools and other purposes comprises epicyclic friction gearing connecting a main shaft to a tool or like carrier of the type in which the friction rollers are only brought into operative driving engagement when the tool &c, is pressed against the work. As applied to the insertion of screws a flexible shaft 10 is connected by a spindle 15 to a conical sun roller 16 which drives similarly shaped planetary rollers 22 loosely mounted in a cage 21 to which is attached a tool-holder 12. The rollers 22 are engaged by a conical member 18. slidably secured by screws 19 and slots to a casing 13 which is prevented from rotating by a handle 14. When applied to a drilling- machine, the sun and planetary rollers are inverted ; the sun roller is attached to the drill spindle, the cage carrying the planetary rollers being driven by the machine spindle, and the conical member is prevented from rotating by hand or by other means such as a lever engaging a stationary part of the machine.
