Abstract
951,846. Machine tool details. G. JOANNES, G. JOANNES, and G. JOANNES, [trading as JOANNES [Firm of]]. March 16, 1962, No. 10225/62. Headings B3B, B3C and B3N [Also in Division F2] A machine head for boring, tapping and like machines provided with a safety device for preventing breakage of tools comprises a casing, a driving shaft, and a spindle coaxial therewith, the shaft and spindle being supported in end-to-end relation in the casing for rotation and translatory movements, means between the casing and shaft to impart translatory movements to the shaft, a spring-loaded slipping clutch means having its driving and driven portions mounted on the facing end of the shaft and spindle, and an externally operable clutch adjusting means in the casing. A tapping machine comprises a shaft 6 driven by an electric motor through a pulley 2, and a bush 3 splined to the shaft, the feed of the shaft being provided by a sleeve 7 keyed to the shaft, which is screwed into a spring urged bush 8 slidably keyed to machine frame 10. Friction discs 19 carried by shaft 6 co-operate with similar discs 20 mounted on a tool driving shaft 21, the pressure between the discs being adjustable by spring-urged plates 29, 32, the latter being screwed to a bush 25 and having gear teeth which co-operate with a pinion 33 so that as the latter is rotated by a knob 35, plate 32 moves relative to bush 25 and varies the pressure on plate 29. The parts attached to shaft 21 are balanced by a counterweight (not shown) sup- ported by a chain 40 which passes over a sprocket 44. In operation if rotation of tool 39 is impeded the increase in torque causes the clutch 19, 20 to slip, bush 8 moves upwardly against spring 11 and a microswitch 16 is actuated to stop the motor.
