Abstract

572,046. Drilling-machines. INDEPENDENT PNEUMATIC TOOL CO. Nov. 17, 1943, No. 19196. Convention date, Feb. 10. [Class 83 (iii)] Relates to portable power-operated tools such as drilling-machines and consists in a redaction gear unit, mounted in a detachable one-piece frame section, for transmitting from the motor spindle to the chuck described in connection with the electric hand drill shown in Fig. 1 and described in Specification 578,755. The gearing has a one-piece housing 12 flanged at 17 for screw connection to the flange 18 of the motor housing. The front end of the gear housing terminates in an extension 40 fitted with a screwed cap 59 that secures both the front spindle bearing 43 in place and also holds a plastic cover 2 against the flange 17. The centre part of the housing has large side openings 51, 52, Fig. 4, through which the parts of the gearing may be inserted laterally. The enclosure of the gearing is completed by a slidon sheet metal shield 53 that acts also as a lubricant retainer. The rear end of the spindle is journalled in a roller bearing 49 mounted in a counter-bore in the end wall of the housing seating a closing-disc 50. The gear 33 is splined on the spindle and secured, against a flange 46 through the interposed ball race and a collar 42, by a circlip 41. The flange 46 serves also as seating stop for the chuck 45. The motor pinion 24 projects through a ball race mounted in the end wall and drives the gear 33 through an intermediate cluster gear 25, 32 mounted at one end in a ball bearing 36 housed at 38 and itself housing a ball bearing 31 by which the gear runs on a stub shaft 26 secured in the housing by a head 29 and cotterpin 28.
