738,918. Machine-tool details; lathes. GIDDINGS & LEWIS MACHINE TOOL CO. Aug. 25, 1953 [Aug. 30, 1952], No. 23412/53. Class 83 (3). A face plate attachment for machine tools of the type having a translatable headstock with a rotatably driven tool spindle journalled therein, such as horizontal boring, milling and drilling machines, comprises a bracket adapted to be removably mounted on the headstock at the spindle end for translatory movement therewith, a circular face plate, means on said bracket supporting said face plate for rotation about an axis parallel to and offset laterally from the axis of the headstock spindle, and means for drivingly connecting the headstock spindle with said face plate to rotate the latter. The attachment frame includes a bracket 25, Fig. 5, which is secured by bolts 26, Figs. 1 and 5, to the end of an underarm 19 which forms part of the main machine and may be fed either independently or in unison with the boring spindle 17. The attachment face-plate 35 is carried by roller bearings 41, Fig. 5, on a hub 27 forming part of the attachment frame. The hub is bored at 52 to take a support bar which is secured to an outboard tailstock when the face-plate is to be used extended some distance from the machine. The internal periphery of the face-plate is provided with teeth 24 which are engaged by a pinion 23 carried by a shaft 22 running in bearings in the attachment housing and taking its drive from the tapered end 18 of the boring &c., spindle 17 of the machine.
