Feeding-devices for granular &c. materials.- Pulverulent fuel, or material, is fed to a receptacle containing gas at high pressure, such as a hydrogenation plant by means of a cavity in a slidable ram, the material being ejected either by rotating the ram or by a blast of gas or by both. A ram 1 with a cavity 2 slides in a boss 3 in a high pressure vessel 4. The cavity, in the outward stroke of the ram, registers with the bottom of a hopper 5 which deposits material into the cavity. On the inward stroke of the ram the material is deposited in the vessel 4 by a partial rotation of the ram, the discharge being accelerated by a blast of gas which may be at 300 atmospheres if the pressure in the vessel 4 is at 250 atmospheres. The blast enters a bore 8 in a bearing 9, this bore registering with a bore 6 in the ram on the inward stroke of the latter. Leather scraper washers 11, 12 are provided to clean any powdered material off the ram and an exhaust port, connected to a gas holder, may be provided in the bearing 9 and adapted to be brought into register with the bore 6 while, the cavity, full of high pressure gas, is passing through the boss 3. The vessel 4 is supplied with gas through a pipe and may be a stationary reaction vessel or a rotating drum from which the powdered material is transferred to a reaction vessel as described in Specification 327,840, [Class 86, Mixing &c.]. The ram 1 may be made double-acting by extending it through the vessel 4 and providing a cavity and hopper at each end.
