Winding-machines; spindle driving apparatus.-In a machine for winding taper bobbins each spindle 5 is driven at a periodically variable speed by a cam rim 18 on the edge of a friction wheel 4 engaging a driving-disc 7 at the base of the bobbin 6, Fig. 1, the shaft 3 of the friction wheel also carries a cam 8 for traversing the thread guide 9 and is driven at a speed independently variable for each spindle. The traverse mechanism comprises rollers 16 pressed on the cam 8 by a spring 15 mounted on roller supports 13, 14 one, 13, of which is secured to a stirrup 12 the other being slidable thereon. The cam 8 thus reciprocates the stirrup 12 and the thread guide 9 which is also displaced on the stirrup by a progression device 17. The disc 7 is pressed against the cam 18 by a spring 10 with an adjustable collar 11. In an alternative form the disc 7, Fig. 4, and the rim 18 have teeth, the pitch of those on the rim being varied in accordance with their radial distance from the spindle 5. The shaft 3 is driven from the wheel 4, the independent variation of the speed of each spindle being effected by stepped cone pulleys, by a conical drum or by a friction roller engaging the face of the wheel 4 at variable radial distance.
