5 Claims.
This invention relates to spindles used in mules or other spinning and twisting machines, and relates more particularly to improved means for centering and driving a bobbin mounted thereon.
It is the general object of our invention to provide an improved construction in a bobbin holder, by which a bobbin will be positively centered as well as frictionally engaged and driven.
More specically, we provide rigid bobbincentering members alternately disposed with respect to the usual yielding devices which drive the bobbin by frictional engagement.
Our invention further relates to arrangements and combinations of parts which Will be hereinafter described and more particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
Preferred forms of our invention are shown in the drawing, in which Fig. l is a side elevation of a portion of a mule spindle embodying one form of our invention;

Figs. 7 and 8 are partial sectional elevations similar to Figs. 4 and 5 but showing a modilied construction.
Referring to the drawing, we have shown a portion of a mule spindle having ablade Iii and Whirl I I and adapted to receive a bobbin B which preferably has double-beveled base anges I2, all of these parts being of the usual construction.
Our improved bobbin holder, as shown in Figs. 1 to 6, comprises a hub 20 adapted to be forced with a press iit on the blade Ill. The hub 2i! has a ilange 2| to receive a cup 22 and a plate or disc 23, which parts are held iirmly on the hub 20 by an outwardly displaced or swedged portion 24.
The cup 22 has a plurality of equally spaced and inwardly offset upstanding centering members or ears 25 formed on its upper edge and positioned to engage the periphery of the bobbin base I2 and to thereby positively center the bobbin B on the spindle. The plate or disc 23 ts within the rim of the cup 22 and is provided with notches 30 to clear the oset members 25 and with notches 3| which are. also equally spaced apart and which alternate with the notches 3l).

10 VThe base I2 lits with slight clearance between the rigid centering members 25, which thus position the bobbin concentric with the blade I0. At the same time, the driving devices 32 frictionally engage the periphery of thefflange I2 and supply frictional force to rotate the bobbin.
Under present commercial'practice, the bobbins B are of substantial length and when filled with yarn are much heavier than the bobbins previously used. There is accordingly an increased chance for an unbalanced weight to throw a bobbin out of center With its spindle, which tendency is effectively offset by our rigid upstanding centering members. The parts 20, 22
and 23 collectively form a support which vertically psitions the bobbin B.
In Figs. 7 and 8, we have shown a modified construction in which the upstanding centering members llt are formed on the disc 4I rather than on the upper edge of the cup 42. The same driving members 32 and spring 36 are used as in the previous form and the operation and advantages of the two forms of our invention are substantially identical.
I-Iaving thus described our invention and the advantages thereof, we do not wish to be limited to the details herein disclosed, otherwise than as set forth in theclaims, but what we claim is:
1. In a spindle, a bobbin holder comprising a bobbin support xed on said spindle, a plurality of movably-mounted bobbin-driving devices rotatable with said support, and bobbin-centeringy disc mounted in fixed spaced relation on said hub bobbin-centering members xed on one of said latter parts, bobbin-driving devices mounted in peripheral notches in said disc and having portions retained below said disc, and means to yieldingly press said devices against the base of said bobbin.
4. In a spindle, a bobbin holder comprising a hub fixed to said spindle, a cup and a notched disc mounted in fixed spaced relation on said hub, bobbin-centering members fixed on the edge of said cup, bobbin-driving devices mounted Ain peripheral notches in said disc and having portions retained below said disc, and means to yieldingly press said devices against the base of said bobbin.
5. In a spindle, a bobbin holder comprising a hub fixed to said spindle, a cup and a notched disc mounted in fixed spaced relation on said hub, bobbin-centering members iixed on the edge of said disc, bobbin-driving devices mounted in peripheral notches in said disc and having portions retained below said disc, and means to yieldingly press said devices against the base of 10 said bobbin.
