Be it known that I, EUGENE A'rwooD, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Stonington, in the county" of New London and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Spindle- Driving Mechanism, of which the following is a specification. o
The. object of my invention is to provide novel `means for mounting and driving spindles.
A practical embodiment of my invention is represented in the accompanying drawings, in which Fig. 1 represents a detail top plan view of one complete unit of the spindle mounting and driving mechanism.

The spindle driving wheel l is mounted on a rotary drive shaft 2 and it is provided -near its periphery with a friction driving ring 3 of leather or other suitable material yarranged concentric to the drive shaft 2.
The spindle is denoted by 4, the whorl by 5, the bolster by G and the laterally swinging holder by 7, which holder is provided with a spring` 8, tending to yieldingly hold the spindle whorl 5 in driving engagement with the friction ring 3. The ring 3 is crowned to provide a concentric whorl contact surface to ensure a constant speed for the spindle. Each spindle rail is provided with an inwardly and upwardly inclined rigid arm let which forms a rigid support for the laterally swinging spindle holder 7. The outer end of the arm 14 forms a stop `15 for limiting the outward swinging movement of the spindle away from the driving wheel.
I preferably provide two oppositely inclined spindles for each driving` wheel, both spindles being disposed radially to the drive shaft 2.
It is evident that any desired number of units may be provided to suit different requirements and it is also evident that either one or two spindles may be arranged to be driven by each of the wheels.
It will also =be seen that each spindle may be individually adjusted to bring it into the desired frictional contact with the driving ring of the wheel, ythus securing the best results in the drive for all of the spindles, the supports for the spindle holders being rigid.

What I claim is 1. A spindle driving wheel, its shaft, a friction driving ring rigidly secured circumferentially on the vertical face of said wheel, a laterally swinging spindle having a whorl disposed radially to said shaft, and means for yieldingly holding the spindle whorl against said ring.
2. A spindle driving wheel, its shaft, a friction driving ring provided with a crowned contact surface, said ring being rigidly secured circumferentially on the vertical face of said wheel, a laterally swinging spindle having a whorl disposed radially to said shaft, and ymeans for yieldingly holding the spindle whorl against said crowned contact surface of the ring.
3. A spindle driving wheel provided with an annular recess in the vertical face, its shaft, a friction driving ring mounted in `said recess, and a laterally swinging spindle having a whorl disposed radially to said shaft, and means for yieldingly holding the vspindle whorl against said ring, the ring being crowned to provide a concentric whorl Contact surface.

shaft, a friction driving ring mounted in said recess, oppositely inclined laterally swinging spindles disposed radially to said shaft, each of said spindles having a whorl, and means for yieldingly holding the spindle whorls against said ring.
5. A spindle driving wheel provided with posed radially lto the shaft, each of* said spindles having' a Whorl, and spring actuated laterally swinging spindle holders mounted on said'supporting means and serving to"yieldingly hold the spindle Whorls against said ring.
7. A spindle driving wheel provided with an annular recess in the vertical face, its shaft, a friction driving ring mounted in said recess, a spindle rail having an inwardly and upwardly projectingrigid arm, a spindle having` a' whorl disposed radially t0 the shaft, and a spring actuated laterally swinging spindlel holder mounted on said arm and serving to yieldingly hold the spindie whorl against said ring. v i
8. A spindle driving wheel provided with an annular recess in the vertical face, its shaft, a friction driving ring mounted in said recess, spindle rails having inwardly and upwardly projecting rigid arms, oppositely inclined spindles disposed radially to said shaft, each of said spindles having a whorl, and spring actuated laterally swinging spindle holders mounted on said arms and serving to yieldingly hold the spindle wliorls against said ring.
