Vacuum tubes.- The light source in a television receiver is of the kind in which a luminous discharge is produced electromagnetically or electrocapacitatively in a rarefied gaseous atmosphere, without the presence of electrodes within the container. The light source is activated electromagnetically by a coil 10 around, embedded in, or within the container 8. The glow may be concentrated on an earthed electrode in the gaseous atmosphere (Fig. 7, not shown). The gas is preferably a mixture of mercury vapour and helium, but may be neon, argon, carbon dioxide or nitrogen. According to a modification the light source is activated capacitatively (Fig. 6, not shown).
