Abstract
328,622. Jones, J. C. Dec. 28, 1928. Variable-speed epicyclic gearing.-In a variablespeed gear in which the driving and driven members are connected through a gearing train, including a worm and worm-wheel at or near the point of irreversibility, speed changes of the driven shaft are effected by an auxiliary electric motor rotated with the gearing. In the construction shown, Fig. 4, the electric motor 9 is carried in a casing 1<a> secured to the driving shaft 1, formed with a yoke 34, 34 in which are mounted worms 38 engaging with a worm-wheel 39 mounted on the driven shaft 8. Variations of speed are obtained by rotation of the worms 38 through a train of wheels 30, 31, 35, 36 driven from the armature shaft 11 of the electric motor. In an alternative construction, the auxiliary motor is mounted on a yoke secured to the driving shaft and directly drives a worm gearing with a wormwheel secured to the driven shaft. The gearing may be controlled automatically by a spring torque-responsive coupling, Fig. 5, introduced between the driving-motor and the variable-speed gearing, comprising members 46, 47 secured to the driving and driven members and connected by springs 49, 50. A ring 51 secured to the member 46 carries opposite resistance windings 52, 53 engaged by brushes 54, 55 on the arm 47 and connected to the armature field circuits of the auxiliary motor. The coupling is arranged so that an increase of torque causes an increased speed of the auxiliary motor. Dashpots 56, 57 are included to damp out vibration and sudden fluctuations in the torque.
