Abstract

328,236. Smith, E. J., and Westing- house Brake & Saxby Signal Co., Ltd. Jan. 22, 1929. Fluid-pressure; covers and protectors for brakes; force-transmitting mechanism.-Fluidpressure braking apparatus for automobile and the like vehicles comprises a brake operating unit which is adapted to be connected to the brake rigging through a member adapted to permit a similar stress to be transmitted either to the front or rear of the unit in order to facilitate mounting of the unit on the vehicle. The unit, comprising a vacuum brake cylinder 1 and valve 2 comprises a lever 10 mounted on a fixed pivot 11 and adapted to be connected by means of a readily detachable pull rod 17 or a rod 14 to the brake rigging forwardly or rearwardly of the unit. The lever 10 is adapted to be moved to apply the brakes by a foot pedal connected to a rod 3 attached to a float lever 4 connected at 6 to the control valve 2 and pivoted at 9 on the lever 10. The effort by the foot is supplemented by the brake cylinder, the piston rod 19 of which is connected at 18 to a lever 21 mounted on the pivot 11 in the fork of the lever 10 on which it bears by means of a surface 22. The pull rod 14 may be connected to the upper end of a lever 26, the upper end of which is also connected to the rear wheel brakes and the lower end of which is connected to the front wheel brakes.
