Abstract

327,615. Taricco, L. May 14, 1929. Coating.-In a process for blackening iron or steel or articles thereof by oxidation, the iron &c. is immersed in a bath of a hot alkaline solution of potassium cyanate, produced by the action of litharge upon potassium cyanide in a solution of sodium or potassium hydrate. The constitution of the bath is as follows :-Potassium hydrate, 35.85 parts by weight; water, 39.82 parts by weight; potassium cyanide, 2.12 parts by weight; litharge, 22.21 parts by weight. The bath has a working temperature of 125-127‹ C., and should the temperature rise through increase of concentration, water must be added. The bath is regenerated by the addition of litharge.
