Abstract

Jib cranes.-The jib a is supported at two points e, f on inclined or curved guides c, d, and the hoisting rope k is led from a drum j' on the frame direct to a guide sheave f on the rear of the jib and thence to the head sheave g so that the load moves horizontally in luffing. In a modification, Fig. 5 (not shown), inclined or curved guides on the jib engage fixed points of support; in two other modifications, Fig. 7, and Fig. 6 (not shown), one point e of the jib is supported on an inclined or curved guide and another point h is supported by the end of a radius link x. The jib may be mounted on road, rail or other chassis, forming a unit with low centre of gravity and requiring little head room. As shown, luffing is effected by ropes n attached to the jib at e and passing round guide sheaves at l and grooved barrels m operated by spur and non-reversing worm gear. In those forms of construction in which the point e moves in a curved path, the barrels m are of fusee type. In the construction shown in Fig. 7, the luffing ropes pass round fusee drums m, the ends of each rope being attached to the jib at e and h. Screw or other gearing may be used for luffing.
