Abstract

Jib cranes.-Horizontal movement of the load in luffing is ensured by passing the load rope 11 over a pulley 10 carried on a member 7 pivoted to the frame at 8 and guided by rollers 6 running on a curved track on the jib. A balance weight 12 for the jib is carried on the guide member 7, and as shown in Fig. 1 may be on the axis of the rollers 6. The weight is always to the right of the line A, B and tends to prevent overturning. In a modification, Fig. 2, the load rope 11 passes round a sheave 3 on the jib-foot pivot and thence to the compensating pulley 10. The balance weight 12 is movable along the member 7, being suspended by a rope 26 attached to the jib at 28 or to the frame at 3 and passing over a pulley 27. The track for the counterweight 12 on the member 7 may be curved. In another modification, the balance weight is carried by a separate radius rod and is guided by a separate cam surface on the jib, and exact balance can then be obtained. As shown in Fig. 4, the luffing motor 14 drives a countershaft 20 on the pivoted member 7 of the compensating gear, and the countershaft drives a pinion 23 engaging a rack 24 upon the jib. In a modification of this arrangement, the luffing motor is mounted on the member 7, and the counterweight is moved along the member 7 by a screw-thread on the countershaft.
