Abstract

Centrifugal-action lubricating; liquid level, maintaining.-In a bearing for a vertical shaft 1 comprising conical rollers 2 arranged with their smaller ends downwards and mounted in a cage 3, an upstanding inwardly-set ring 12 surrounding the shaft is secured to the inner periphery of a ring 8 carrying the outer race 5 and resting on the machine casing 10, so as to provide an inner oil trough 16 into which the lower corners of the rollers 2 or of the cage 3 dip, whereby oil is caused by centrifugal action to work up to the upper ends of the rollers and overflow into an outer trough 17 which communicates with the trough 16 by transverse passages 19. The maximum level of oil in the trough is determined by an overflow hole 20 formed eccentrically in a bush 21 which is rotatably mounted in the casing so as to enable the level to be regulated. Alternatively, the level may be determined by a cranked rotatably-mounted overflow pipe.
