Abstract

808,502. Lubricating. CRAMICENGINEERING CO. Ltd., and WILLSON, D. J. Aug. 8, 1956 [Aug. 15, 1955], No. 23496/55. Class 12 (3). A lubricated bearing for a rotatable member comprises a fixed support, a ball or roller bearing having a race mounted in or on the support and a concentric race mounted on or in the rotating member respectively, a liquid lubricant reservoir radially displaced from and out of contact with the bearing, and a wick or like capillary member extending upwardly from the reservoir to a point above the uppermost part of the bearing. In the construction shown in Fig. 1, a vertical shaft 1 is rotatably mounted at its lower end in a support 2, which is provided with an annular recess forming a reservoir 11 for lubricating oil. A pad of absorbent material 16 such as felt or fibrous asbestos is fitted into the reservoir and a wick 17 is in contact with the pad 16 at its lower end, its upper end terminating above a ball bearing 3. Lubricant is forced or fed by gravity to the reservoir 11 through a duct 18. Packing rings 10 form a lubricant and dust seal on both sides of the bearing 3. In the construction shown in Fig. 2 the horizontal shaft 1 is rotatably mounted in ball bearings 3 in supports 2, each of which has a cavity extending horizontally across the support to form the lubricant reservoir 11. The reservoir is closed by a lid 19 and has an absorbent pad 16 in contact with a wick 17 which is bent over the top of the reservoir and extends down to the bearing 3.
