Abstract

323,985. Johnson, J. Y., (I. G. Farbenindustrie Akt.-Ges.). April 8, 1929. Manures.-A fertilizer is made by heating phosphoric acid with potassium or ammonia chloride or a mixture of these chlorides, until substantial amounts of hydrochloric acid are expelled, and adding ammonium nitrate and, if desired, potassium nitrate or urea, or both of the last-mentioned substances, to the resulting mass, and finally treating the mixture with ammonia. Nitric acid, prferably concentrated, may replace a part or the whole of the potassium nitrate. The heating of the phosphoric acid and chloride mixture may be in a vacuum or in a current of water vapour or both. If potassium pyrophosphate or metaphosphate is formed at this step of the process it may be converted into orthophosphate by boiling with nitric acid or heating with water in an autoclave. The ammonium nitrate may be added in solid form or as a concentrated melt.
