Abstract
1441449 Ammonium polyphosphates GEWERKSCHAFT VICTOR CHEMISCHE WERKE 11 Sept 1973 [16 Sept 1972 31 March 1973] 42747/73 Heading C1A Crystalline water-insoluble ammonium polyphosphates are prepared by condensing a melt of water-soluble ammonium phosphate by mixing at 200-400‹ C. in a stream of undilated gaseous ammonia until at least 90% of the polyphosphate is water-insoluble (defined as less than 5% dissolved in water at 25‹ C. in 30 minutes). Wet process phosphoric acid may be treated with ammonia and concentrated to give the water-soluble ammonium phosphate. The process may be continuous or batch. The condensation reaction may take from 30 to 150 minutes and may be carried out in the presence of recycled ammonium polyphosphate to keep the reaction mixture dry and crumbly. The product may be size-reduced at 100-200‹ C. and may be washed with 15-25% ammoniacal water.
