Abstract
1491500 Alkali metal phosphates USS ENGS & CONSULTANTS Inc 4 Nov 1974 [2 Nov 1973] 47635/74 Heading ClA Alkali metal phosphates are prepared by a method which comprises extracting wet-process phosphoric acid with an organic solvent, selected from n-hexanol, n-heptanol, n-octanol, iso-octanol or mixtures of these, stripping some of the acid from the solvent extract with water, treating the resulting aqueous extract with an alkali-metal base, such as NaOH, Na 2 CO 3 , Na 2 HPO 4 or Na 3 PO 4 and separating the resulting precipitated impurities to leave a first aqueous phase containing alkalimetal phosphate, and stripping further phosphoric acid from the organic solvent extract with aqueous alkali metal base to yield a second aqueous phase containing alkali-metal phosphate which is preferably combined with the first aqueous phase. The ratio of alkali metal to phosphorus in the combined aqueous phase may be adjusted so that an alkalimetal tripolyphosphate is obtained on drying the aqueous phase and calcining the dried product.
