Abstract
1404546 Purifying phosphonic acid R A OETKER [trading as CHEMISCHE FABRIK BUDENHEIM RUDOLF A OETKER] 19 June 1973 [19 June 1972] 28935/73 Heading C1A H 3 PO 4 is purified by contacting a mixture of the acid and a water miscible organic solvent with a cone. aq. soln. of an inorganic salt and/or hydroxide, to form an H 3 PO 4 -containing organic phase and an impurity-containing inorganic phase, and then following separation of the two phases, the H 3 PO 4 is recovered from the organic phase by distilling off the solvent. The inorganic salt may be an acid phosphate, carbonate, sulphate or borate of Mg, Zn, Ca or Al. The salt or hydroxide may be added in solid form to the organic phase. The organic solvent may be a ketone and/or an aliphatic alcohol, preferably isopropanol. The purified acid/ organic phase may be contacted with a strong acid cation exchanger in the H<SP>+</SP> form to remove inorganic phase ions prior to separation of the organic phase. The acid may be wet-process, a pickle liquor or electrolytic.
