Abstract

1,222,195. Phosphoric acid. ALLIED CHEMICAL CORP. 27 March, 1969 [28 March, 1968], No. 16218/69. Heading C1A. Orthophosphoric acid having a low calcium chloride content is prepared by treating a calcium-containing phosphate composition, e.g. phosphate rock, with hydrochloric acid to give an acidulate which is then extracted with a mixture comprising a liquid hydrocarbon and an alcohol having 4 to 8 carbon atoms to remove the phosphoric acid. Suitable alcohols are acidulate-immiscible and capable of dissolving orthophosphoric acid and include n-butyl, isobutyl and iso-amyl alcohols, and preferred hydrocarbons are benzene, ethylbenzene, toluene or a hexane, heptane or xylene, although other alcohols and hydrocarbons are also mentioned. Preferably, the acidulation step is carried out in the presence of alkali metal ions and excess hydrochloric acid, the former to precipitate any soluble silica present in the starting material and the latter to remove any unreacted phosphate. The extractant is suitably saturated with water prior to use and the extraction may be carried out as a multi-stage countercurrent operation, and followed by a similar extraction with water to extract the phosphoric acid (see Figure, not shown).
