Abstract

1,209,272. Purifying phosphoric acid. ISRAEL MINING INDUSTRIES-INSTITUTE FOR RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT. 23 Feb., 1968 [6 March, 1967], No. 8876/68. Heading C1A. Purified phosphoric acid is recovered from technical grade phosphoric acid by extraction with a solvent which, at the temperature of the extraction, forms a three-phase H 3 PO 4 -H 2 O- solvent system, which stratifies into three layers, the bottom one, containing H 2 O, H 3 PO 4 , and impurities, being discarded, and the phosphoric acid/solvent phase is submitted to a treatment which causes release therefrom of purified aqueous phosphoric acid solution. The H 3 PO 4 may be released from the extract by heating the extract to such a temperature that the three-phase system becomes a twophase system, whereupon aqueous B 3 PO 4 separates as the lower layer, or alternatively water may be added to achieve the same effect, or a combination of both methods may be used. 0À1 to 5% by weight of H 2 SO 4 may be added to the initial acid to promote its extraction, the solvent is preferably a di-lower alkyl ether, and the process may be operated continuously. A modification of the process is described wherein after formation of a three-phase system just enough H 3 PO 4 is added to cause the system to change to a two-phase system whose upper organic phase is then separated into two phases, the lower of which is the product aqueous H 3 PO 4 .
