Abstract
1350823 Purification of isobutylene oxide DAICEL Ltd 11 May 1971 [15 May 1970] 14296/71 Heading C2C Crude isobutylene oxide solution containing 2% or more by weight of water is purified by removing water from the crude isobutylene oxide solution by means of a conventional method of dehydration not involving distillation to obtain a predehydrated isobutylene oxide solution having a water content of less than 2% by weight and then distilling azeotropically said predehydrated isobutylene oxide solution to give a substantially anhydrous isobutylene oxide solution as a still residue. Specified means of dehydration are the use of drying agents or freeze dehydration. Specified drying agents are NaOH, KOH, CaH 2 , Na 2 SO 4 (anhydride), Na 2 CO 3 , K 2 CO 3 , CaCl 2 (anhydride or dihydrate) and synthetic zeolite. The anhydrous solution of isobutylene oxide may be subjected to a second distillation step to remove methyl acetate or ethyl acetate. Examples are given which illustrate the process.
