Abstract

1504018 Recovering phosphate values UNITED STATES GYPSUM CO 8 Oct 1975 [25 Oct 1974] 41172/75 Heading C1A Phosphate values are leached from material containing both phosphatic mineral and calcium by contacting the material with a leach acid mixture of H 2 SO 4 and either HCl or HNO 3 in amounts ranging from 0À956 to 0À1294 moles H 2 SO 4 , from 0À0637 to 0À0861 moles HC1 or HNO 3 , and from 44À4 to 60À8 moles of H 2 O per mole P 2 O 5 in the material, whereby 1 mole Ca per mole P 2 O 5 is leached from the material and withdrawing a phosphoric acid leach liquor containing between 5 and 7% by wt. P 2 O 5 . The phosphatic material may be treated with the leach acid at 100‹ to 140‹ F. at a rate of 13À7 to 16À7 tons of leach acid per ton P 2 O 5 in the material. The withdrawn leach liquor may be treated by raising the pH to between 2 and 3 to precipitate, e.g. Fe, Al and fluoride impurities, and then further raising the pH to between 3 and 5 to precipitate Ca 3 (PO 4 ) 2 .
